The trial's taken nigh-on a year and the verdict's finally in: and thank God it's over - Amanda Knox and Sollecito guilty of Kercher murder.
We can sit here all day and debate whether justice has been done or how attractive Knox is, but frankly the important thing is that it looks like we've thankfully been spared yet another round of, *cough*, 'penetrating interview'-wrapped-in-sympathy-fest on Oprah and Larry fucking King.
Thank you Italy! Berlusconi may be a global joke, but today you did the world a service!

Not so fast: actually as a citizen of the USA, I think this verdict will trigger a whole new round of all-American coverage; I'm sure Larry King, Oprah & co. will all weigh in-- and I bet the first of the insta-books about this shady case will appear within days; some poor writer-for-hire is sitting up all night tonight finishing up. Agreed about Berlusconi being a global joke-- and it sounds like the Italian forensics folks could learn a lot just by watching some good old American CSI...
ReplyDeleteI agree: I think the verdict will spring a new round of US media brouhaha (as if there hadn't been enough already).
ReplyDeleteI also think that Americans don't think that justice has been served here - indeed the "but what about...?" brigade in the US media are already up in arms about the verdict. I think that Knox et al faced some pretty damning scene-of-crime DNA evidence which they couldn't explain away, which in the end is what convicted them. That said, they've got the appeal to go yet, and it wouldn't surprise me if they walk free as a result of it.
But if not, then I’m happy that justice has been served and been seen to be served here.
"Brouhaha' is an excellent choice of word. I forgot to mention along with a book, I have no doubt a Made for TV movie or two is already being shot in the States. I know the coverage here is biased, but still-- the CNN website has an interesting slide-show presentation on the major evidence, giving a thumbnail summary of 'both sides'-- to me, there still sounds like there's a lot of 'reasonable doubt' here-- will try to find the link on that though these things change so fast; hard to keep up with the ever-shifting winds of scandal here-- ELizabeth

ReplyDelete
PS: OK, found the link. For those who ‘can’t stop following’ this disturbing story, here is an interesting step-be-step slide-show look at the Evidence in the Knox case. This summarizes the arguments on both sides. Sounds to me like there is lots of ‘reasonable doubt’ here–
but ‘you be the judge’:

Thanks for the CNN link Elizabeth – and you make a sage observation about the likelihood of a 'Made-for-TV' movie already being in the offing, too! This Amanda Knox case has got Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch written all over it – both of which, by the time the media had finished with them, turned out to be complete fabrications of real events.
ReplyDeletePS: for a pretty even-handed précis of what happened in the Italian court, see this link
? Italy has not done justice-and i am not debating. How can anyone say you believe Foxy Knoxy and Sollecito committed this murder? Italian and British media decided they were guilty without evidence... NO DNA of Knoxy and beau in the room Kershner was found murdered.... The media just wants to pick on a sleazy, young American girl who just happened to room with a girl who slept around.
ReplyDeleteBTW-who watches Larry or Oprah?
And why would 'The Media' (regardless of its nationality) do as you claim, Cheryl?
ReplyDeletetoo true, cosmic! thanks for writing the only palatable bit about the whole knox meshuggas!
ReplyDeleteGood to see you back M.E. - and it looks like the feelings of injustice are becoming stronger in the US
ReplyDeleteHavw a look at this article from today's paper over here - looks like the overwhelming feeling there is that Knox is innocent.

Interesting article. The Italian system seems a bit different from ours (mad, hysterical laughter) in that there will be several more processes to go through. I would hope and guess that Knox will not wind up in jail at all when it's all over.
ReplyDeleteI guess the OJ Simpson defense didn't work as well in Italy. Go figure.

Aye, the Italian legal system operates closer to the Napoleonic Code, whereas both UK & US operate under the adversarial system - so whereas we'd agree the areas and points over which the prosecution and defence would contest prior to the trial beginning, at a pre-trial hearing, the Italian system sets out to find out exactly what happened and get as close as it can to the truth of the matter - the UK & US approach would also be to introduce all manner of tricks and trip-ups and to get certain evidence or witnesses tossed or introduced.
ReplyDeleteYeah Dan, I think they attempted what's called the 'anti-pasta' defence here and it looks to have back-fired on them terribly... ;)
ReplyDeleteThis is now getting out of hand - with echoes of 'Freedom Fries' for French Fries, when the US wanted to hurt the French, after their point-blank refusal to back a 2nd UN resolution over Iraq, the US is now threatening to boycott Italian wines, holidays and foods after Knox's guilty verdict.
ReplyDeleteBlimey, you sure caused a stir with this one Bren..... ! luvvin it! [throws scarf around shoulders and flounces out of front door]
